Sleep Dentistry – What’s All the Hype About?
Dr. Lanny M Jacob
What is Sleep Dentistry?
So, what is sleep dentistry? Sleep dentistry is one of the most curiosity invoking and asked about services offered at our office. Best known for being a great solution for patients who experience anxiety when it comes to dental visits, it’s a way for patients to relax and enjoy a comfortable dental experience. With the ability to ease dental anxiety, some would even call it one of the greatest advances in the dental industry (and we’re some of those people!).
Sleep Dentistry at Advanced Dental Arts
Sleep dentistry has been something we’ve offered patients for over 15 years now, and both Dr. Abells and I have been professionally trained to administer this type of treatment.
My experience goes back to 15+ years ago, when I visited Calgary and trained with a dentist associated with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS). We’ve seen such success and interest in sleep dentistry that a few years back Dr. Abells jumped on the sleep dentistry wagon and took a course here, in Winnipeg, offered by the Manitoba Dental Association.
The specialized training needed for sleep dentistry means that not every dental office has the ability or training to administer it, so we are very proud to be one of the Winnipeg dental offices that can.
Why Choose Sleep Dentistry?
Sleep dentistry can be a good solution for a variety of people, but we find most of those who choose this type of service have some level of anxiety or fear of visiting the dentists or having the work itself done.
Whether it’s from a bad previous dental experience, sensitive teeth or gums, fear of needles, bad gag reflexes or other reasons, it really can be the best way to help restore your smile. A lot of the sleep dentistry patients we see haven’t had dental treatment for an extended period, which often means there is lots of work to be done.
For us, seeing how grateful each patient is when we’ve completed the work is the best reward. A beautiful, healthy smile really can make a huge difference in self-confidence!
How Much Does Sleep Dentistry Cost?
You’re all probably wondering – but how much does this cost?! As we mentioned above, in our experience a lot of our sleep dentistry patients have put off dentistry for years, which means that there is a lot of work to be done. The cost of the sedation is only a small part of the treatment costs and therefore it really depends on how much work and the type of work that needs to be done to help restore your smile. On average, as a baseline, you’re looking at a minimum charge of $400.
Ongoing Dental Care is Your Best Option
The best way to keep your dental fees down is by regular visits, proper brushing & flossing and being careful of what you eat. If you haven’t been in to a dental office in a long time because your anxiety or fears are holding you back, we’d love to have a chance to sit down with you and discuss how sleep sedation can help in restoring your beautiful smile.
